Joan Cooper

Professor Joan Cooper was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor(Students) & Registrar at UNSW in May 2007. Her primary responsibility will be the whole spectrum of the undergraduate student experience – from recruitment through to graduation. She will also be responsible for postgraduate coursework students, paralleling the valuable role the Dean of Graduate Research, Professor Cooper was formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Flinders University. She is a former Dean of Informatics at the University of Wollongong, where she served as Chair of the University Senate, and has held senior positions at the Australian National University and The University of Newcastle.
At Flinders, Professor Cooper had been responsible for the leadership and management of academic policies and procedures, and leadership in quality assurance, learning and teaching. She also had responsibility for a number of significant University-wide projects including the establishment of a student portal.
Professor Cooper completed her Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Newcastle. She was the foundation Professor of Information Technology at Wollongong University, and the first female professor of IT in Australia. In 2003 she was appointed an Emeritus Professor of Wollongong, a title conferred in recognition of her contribution to the University, and in 2004 she was awarded the University of Newcastle’s Convocation Medal for Professional Excellence.
While coming from an area of technical and scientific research, Professor Cooper also has had extensive experience in the social sciences and has developed a thorough knowledge of relevant research methodologies. She has researched, taught and consulted in both technical and theoretical areas, as well as in areas that are more managerial and policy oriented. This unusual aspect of her experience helps her to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical practitioners in industry.
Professor Cooper is a Fellow of ACS (The Australian Computer Society), a Foundation member of the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (FICA) and a member of IEEE. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Technology and Applied Electronic Commerce Research, on the International Editorial Advisory Board of The International Journal of Cases on Electronic Commerce and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Research and Practice in Information Technology. |

Robert Carmichael
Audit Director, AUQA

Since joining AUQA in 2002, Rob has been Audit Director for six audits of Self Accrediting Institutions; three audits of State and Territory Accreditation Agencies (STAAs); and in 2006 was Audit Director for the first AUQA audit of a Non Self-Accrediting Institution – the Australian College of Theology.
Prior to joining AUQA, for ten years Rob was the Head of the Office for Quality Education at Swinburne University of Technology. In this capacity he was responsible for the initial development, ongoing operation and continual improvement of the University’s Quality Management System. Prior to this Rob worked in the VET sector as a curriculum development specialist, as a teacher, and as an academic manager, and before that he taught humanities in secondary schools. He is a formally qualified Quality Assessor and a trained quality auditor. In 2004 Rob was also Chairperson of the Joint Steering Group for the AUQF held in Adelaide. In 2008 Rob will begin consulting with the STAAs about the nature of their second cycle of AUQA audits in 2010.
When not engaged in AUQA business, Rob tries to find the time to enjoy family life (such as going for runs with life-partner Annie and the two whippets); going up-country or hiking; listening to classical music, and reading history and/or perusing the “for-sale” sections of classic motorcycling magazines!

Nigel Bond
Associate Head (Research), University of Western Sydney

Professor Nigel Bond received his BSc (Hons) in 1970 and PhD in 1973, both from Nottingham University, UK. He came to Australia in 1973, to take up a position at Macquarie University. He became Professor of Psychology and Head of the School of Psychology at Flinders University in 1992. He joined the University of Western Sydney as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) in late 1996 until December 2006 when he completed his second five year term and is now enjoying life as Professor of Psychology.
Professor Bond has edited four books, including 'An Introduction to Psychological Science', produced two CD-ROMs, several book chapters, and approximately 90 refereed articles. His teaching has been in the broad area of experimental psychology, including learning, cognition, and physiological psychology. He has taught at all levels from introductory to doctoral and continue to do so, although engagements are somewhat reduced. Research interests have included the aetiology of fetal alcohol syndrome, neural grafting and the repair of brain injury, human olfactory memory, the interaction of the visual and verbal in eye-witness memory, and the peer review process. Professor Bond served on the Australian Research Council from 1995-97.
Professor Bond is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia and the Australian Psychological Society.
Professor Bond is also Co-Executive Editor of the journal 'Appetite'.

Marilee Bresciani
Associate Professor of Postsecondary Education Leadership, San Diego State University
|
Marilee J. Bresciani, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Postsecondary Education Leadership at San Diego State University, where she coordinates the masters in Student Affairs/Services in community colleges and higher education, the certificate in institutional research, planning, and assessment, and the masters and doctorate in community college leadership. The curriculum at San Diego State University emphasizes student learning centeredness, integration of the curricular and co-curricular learning paradigms, and analysis, planning, and responsible practice of leaders in a socially just and global environment.
Dr. Bresciani’s research focuses on the evaluation of student learning and development. She uses grounded theory to explore how systems and processes contribute to student learning centeredness, which includes the study of leaders’ roles in these systems and processes.
Dr. Bresciani has held faculty and higher education administration positions for over 20 years. In those positions, she has conducted enrollment management research, quantitative and qualitative institutional research, course-embedded assessment, and academic and administrative program assessment. Previously as Assistant Vice President for Institutional Assessment at Texas A&M University and as Director of Assessment at North Carolina State University, Dr. Bresciani led university-wide initiatives to embed faculty-driven outcomes-based assessment in the curriculum. She has led reforms in outcomes-based assessment program review, assessment of general education, quality enhancement, and assessment of the co-curricular.
Dr. Bresciani has been invited to present and publish her findings on assessment and is a leading author of two books on assessing student learning and outcomes-based assessment program review. She has edited a book on good practice case studies in general education assessment and is currently at work on identifying good practices in assessment of student learning in student affairs/services. Dr. Bresciani has developed and delivered several courses on assessment of student learning, and serves on the editorial board of the NASPA Journal. She is a reviewer for the Australian Quality Assurance Agency and is also a managing partner in an international assessment and enrollment management consulting firm.
Dr. Bresciani holds a Ph.D. in Administration, Curriculum, and Instruction from the University of Nebraska and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Hastings College.

Michael Green

| Michael Green is currently General Manager, Manufacturing Innovation in the Manufacturing Division of the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. He is also Director of the Space Licensing and Safety Office. Prior to joining the Australian Public Service, Michael Green was Head of Engineering at the Australian National University and Associate Dean (Undergraduate) in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. He is a winner of a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching at the ANU. Michael Green has served on the ANU Teaching and Learning Committee and as staff-elected representative on the ANU Council and ANU Finance Committee. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust) and has been Vice-President of the Australasian Association of Engineering Education. |
